Bulk Milk cooler with Heat Recovery Unit



Working of heat recovery unit.

  • While in running condition refrigerant is discharged from the compressor – condenser respectively back to original liquid form.

  • This discharged gas is at higher temperature and pressure and is further sent to condenser to get condensed.

  • Instead of sending this high temperature gas directly to condenser, it is sent through the heat recovery unit.

  • This high temperature of gas is used to heat the medium (water) in the heat recovery unit which is to be used for CIP purpose.

  • Thus in above process the heat transfer takes place and as a result of which the temperature of discharged refrigerant is reduced relatively.

  • This reduced temperature gas is supplied to condenser due to which the efficiency of condenser is increased.

  • During this process, the milk available in Bulk milk cooler is also cooled down after a lower compression ratio and as the temperature of milk goes down by continuous recirculation

  • In above condition reverse heat transfer may occur because , the product /medium available in HRU is having a higher temperature than gas, this reverse heat transfer cools down the product/medium temperature in HRU and thus increase the temperature of discharged gas, thus this will reduce overall efficiency.

  • To overcome this problem solenoid valves are provided which are connected to temperature controller. The desired (programmed) temperature is achieved by the solenoid valves shuts off and hence the incoming gas is bypassed from HRU and directly enters into condenser primarily solenoid valves open and when the product /medium temperature goes down the set point.



  • Economic benefits: It is necessary to do CIP (cleaning in place) of Bulk Milk Cooler after every collection cycle. The CIP requires hot water at 65° C to 75° C temperature for effective cleaning. Till now this high temperature of water is achieved by using electric geezers/ electric rods or through external wood fired system, which are not found sufficient and efficient. Moreover energy conservation was overlooked apart from pollution



  • It is to be noted that the maximum capacity of geezer is about 50 liters and the power consumption for a cycle of CIP cycle is 24 KW per day.

Functional Benefits:

  • Heat Recovery Systems are quiet in operation and there is no need for noisy extractor fans.

  • Provision of bottom outlet to drain water completely.

  • Provision of Stand (for ST Series) with 6 feet stand which eliminates need of balance tank & extra pump and thus saves capital and running cost as well.

  • For high heat transfer laser welded plates are used in HRU.

Process Benefits:



  • CIP process requires minimum of hot water of 65° C for effective cleaning, whereas using HRU it is possible to achieve hot water of from 65° C to 80 ° C from same unit.

  • With capacity such as 200 liters high volume of hot water is generated.

  • The tank design is made in such a fashion that adequate volume of water can be processed for CIP, which has a limitation in case of Geezer/ Immersion rod/ wood fire type heating.
